Cordelia Naismith is a scientist and survey commander whose expedition collapses when a military attack strands her on an unfamiliar planet with enemy officer Aral Vorkosigan. Forced to cooperate in a hostile environment, they discover that their assumptions about one another—and about the war surrounding them—are incomplete. Their relationship grows through competence, trust, moral disagreement, and shared survival rather than instant attraction. The novel blends planetary exploration, military politics, ethical questions, and a mature romantic arc. It is an excellent older counterpart to modern queer space romances, though the central relationship here is heterosexual and the science is more space-opera than hard SF.
