About this book

Orlando starts out as a young nobleman at the court of Elizabeth I. He somehow lives on through more than three hundred years of English history, and partway through he wakes up as a woman. Moving from frozen Thames fairs to Constantinople to Victorian drawing rooms, the novel follows a poet looking for love, fame and a self that holds together while the centuries change the rules around them. Woolf writes it as a mock biography that is witty, romantic and openly subversive, using a touch of the impossible to ask what gender, time and identity really are. It is a short, inventive book that is as much fun as it is daring.
