Mickey Barnes is an Expendable on a human colony mission to the icy world of Niflheim. He gets the jobs too dangerous for anyone else, and when one of them kills him, the colony grows a new body and uploads his memories. Mickey has been through this six times. Then a mission goes wrong and he survives it, only to find that Mickey8 has already been printed. On a colony with tight food rations and no tolerance for duplicates, two Mickeys is one too many. Meanwhile the planet's native creatures may not be what the colonists assume. The story is told in a dry, funny first-person voice and mixes survival problem-solving with real questions about identity, along with a love story that matters to Mickey.
