About this book
Larry Darrell comes home to Chicago after the First World War shaken by what he has seen. He turns down a secure career and a comfortable marriage and sets out to find what gives life meaning. His search takes him through bohemian Paris, mines and monasteries in Europe, and finally to India. The narrator is a worldly writer who keeps crossing paths with Larry and the people around him, among them the woman who loves him, a snobbish society uncle and old friends caught up in the boom and crash of the 1920s. Maugham contrasts ambition with contemplation in a warm, highly readable story about choosing an inner life over an expected one.
