About this book
First published in 1948, this autobiography follows Thomas Merton from a wandering childhood in France, England and America through a restless youth at Cambridge and Columbia. He spends those years among books, jazz, friendships and political ideas, and still feels he has no settled direction. Gradually his questions about meaning take him toward faith, and finally to the silence of a Trappist monastery in rural Kentucky. Merton writes with candour, humour and richly worded reflection, looking honestly at his own vanity, his grief and his longing. It is a sweeping, unhurried account of an inner search, and it remains one of the twentieth century's best-loved spiritual memoirs.
