About this book
In an eighteenth-century Dorset village on a wild stretch of coast, orphaned John Trenchard grows up hearing legends of a lost diamond and of a notorious Mohune ancestor buried beneath the church. One stormy night he stumbles into the vault the smugglers use, and that discovery pulls him into their world of contraband, secret passages and divided loyalties. Narrated by John looking back on his youth, the novel blends coastal atmosphere, friendship and danger in rich period prose. It is a classic tale of youthful adventure with a strong sense of place and long chapters that each end at a natural stopping point.
