About this book
A young sailor, Edmond Dantès, appears poised for happiness until an accusation destroys his future and sends him to prison. His struggle to understand the betrayal begins an expansive adventure through captivity, hidden fortunes, Parisian society, and carefully cultivated new identities. Set against the political upheavals of nineteenth-century France, the novel gathers sailors, aristocrats, financiers, and families into an intricate web of ambition and obligation. Its sweeping scale accommodates both extravagant adventure and searching questions about justice: what does a wronged man owe others once he acquires the power to punish them?
