About this book
A huge yellow diamond, taken from a temple in India, is left to young Rachel Verinder on her eighteenth birthday. That same night it disappears from her family's Yorkshire country house. Suspicion falls on servants, guests and visitors. The famous Sergeant Cuff is called in, but the case keeps getting stranger. Several narrators tell the story in turn, each with a distinct and often funny voice, and each sees only part of the truth. The novel combines family secrets, romance, a strand of curses and obsession, and a slow-building puzzle. It's an absorbing Victorian page-turner.
