About this book
As Nazi rule closes around Vienna, Ruth Berger finds herself separated from her family and unable to leave. A marriage of convenience to British scientist Quinton Somerville offers an escape, but their agreement becomes considerably harder to untangle once Ruth reaches England. University life, eccentric acquaintances, family expectations, and competing attachments complicate a relationship meant to exist only on paper. Moving between a refugee community, academic circles, and the English countryside, the novel combines affectionate social comedy with the dislocation of exile. Its generous ensemble and romantic misunderstandings give a serious historical setting a warm, lively human scale.
