About this book
In 1972, computer expert Catherine Velis travels from New York to Algeria and becomes entangled in the search for a legendary chess set. In revolutionary France, another young woman faces the dangerous task of protecting pieces from that same set as they leave a secluded abbey. Their alternating stories draw together cryptic clues, political rivalries, historical personalities, and a game whose stakes extend far beyond the board. Expansive and exuberantly intricate, this adventure treats history as a puzzle full of hidden connections, combining international intrigue with an atmosphere of mathematical mystery and ancient secrets.
