About this book

In 1866, a young Scot arrives in Hokitika, a gold-rush town on New Zealand's wild West Coast. He walks into a hotel smoking room and interrupts a secret meeting of twelve local men. Each man holds part of a puzzle: a rich man has vanished, a hermit has died, a fortune has been found in his cottage, and a young woman has been found in the road. The story moves between their points of view and is built around the movements of the stars and planets. It is a slow-building Victorian-style mystery about greed, love, luck and fate, written in rich, old-fashioned prose.
