About this book
Built from two lectures, this short book makes an argument against a long-standing suspicion of beauty in academic life. The first part considers what happens in the moment of finding something beautiful, including the errors and revisions that follow. The second takes up the charge that attention to beauty distracts from political injustice, and argues instead that the experience of beauty trains a kind of fairness and decentring of the self. The reasoning is tightly built and the examples range from palm trees to poems and paintings, making a demanding case in under one hundred and fifty pages.
