About this book
In an Irish town during the cold weeks before Christmas in 1985, coal merchant Bill Furlong makes deliveries while reflecting on his childhood, family and modest prosperity. A visit to the local convent exposes him to something his neighbours would rather leave unexamined. He must decide what responsibility an ordinary person bears when silence is safer and more socially acceptable. Claire Keegan tells this morally demanding story in spare, precise prose, giving equal weight to domestic tenderness and institutional cruelty. The novella is brief enough for one or two sittings but leaves its central ethical question deliberately resonant.
