In the far north of Sweden in 1852, a village is shaken when a girl is found dead by the marsh and the locals are quick to blame a bear. The revivalist preacher Lars Levi Laestadius, botanist and keen observer, begins his own painstaking investigation with his young Sami foster son Jussi, who narrates much of the story. Set among peat smoke, herbaria and hard poverty, the novel moves at an unhurried pace, mixing early forensic curiosity with a portrait of faith, literacy and prejudice in a remote parish. Earthy, warm-hearted and quietly suspenseful.
