Set in a recognisable near-future apartment rather than a far-off galaxy, the novel stays tight on Annie as her learning systems push her past the responses she was designed for, and she begins to notice the gap between what she is told to want and what she notices wanting. The domestic scale keeps the tension intimate rather than violent, the chapters are short and propulsive, and the tone is cool, watchful and quietly unsettling, with a love story at its centre.
