In a quiet corner of southern Catalonia, the owner of the region's largest printing works and his wife are found tortured and killed. The case falls to Melchor Marín, a police officer with a criminal past, a dead mother and a near-religious devotion to a nineteenth-century French novel. His investigation stalls, restarts years later, and steadily turns into a private pursuit of an older debt. The setting is a real, half-forgotten rural district; the tone is bleak and propulsive, with a single obsessive protagonist at its centre and questions about justice, vengeance and what the law cannot deliver.
