On a stretch of Northumberland moorland, a teenage girl spends a hot summer at an experimental archaeology camp, where a professor and his students attempt to live as Iron Age Britons. Her father, a bus driver obsessed with ancient Britain, keeps the household under a harsh discipline that the reenactment only sharpens. Foraging, hunger and ritual talk press the group toward something none of them quite admits to wanting. Narrated in a close, wary first person, the novel moves swiftly from bog-country beauty to real menace, holding class, nationalism and family violence in the same tight frame. Brief, atmospheric and quietly frightening.
