Jazz Bashara is a porter in Artemis, humanity's first and only city on the Moon, where she hauls cargo for legitimate wages and smuggles contraband for everything else. When an opportunity arrives that could clear her debts for good, she agrees to a job whose engineering is tricky and whose politics turn out to be far more dangerous than the vacuum outside. Set in a lunar economy worked out down to the welding rigs and life-support margins, the story runs on improvised fixes, sharp banter and escalating trouble. Short, propulsive chapters and a wisecracking first-person narrator keep the near-future setting tangible rather than abstract.
