Set in a riverside English town of boat clubs, garden parties and small social hierarchies, the novel keeps its tone light and its clues fair, favouring nosy conversation over violence. Short chapters, three sharply distinct sleuths and a properly constructed puzzle make it easy to read in stretches of ten minutes or two hours.
