Nombeko Mayeki is born in a Soweto shack and rises, by way of arithmetic, stubbornness and extraordinary luck, into an international mess involving an atomic bomb, a Swedish republican, twin brothers who officially are one person and a monarch or two. Spanning decades and continents, the novel stitches real twentieth-century history into farce, letting coincidence pile on coincidence until the absurdity has its own logic. The tone is dry and cheerful throughout, the chapters short and propulsive, and the cast large enough that every turn introduces someone new to complicate the plan.
