Abandoned by her mother, married unhappily and consumed by obsession, she falls under the influence of the enigmatic servant Zofloya, whose counsel grows steadily more sinister. Set among palaces, Alpine banditti and poisoned households, the novel is feverish, melodramatic and unapologetically extreme, notorious in its own day for a heroine who is neither innocent nor repentant. A key early work of women's Gothic writing, best read for its heat rather than its subtlety.
