Her uncle, the landlord, is a violent man whose night-time business involves wrecked ships and silent wagons, and Mary soon finds herself weighing loyalty, fear and her own dangerous curiosity. Set in the early nineteenth century, the novel moves at a brisk, suspenseful pace through fog, storm and isolated cottages, with a heroine whose watchfulness drives every scene. Atmospheric, morally uneasy and steadily tightening, it is gothic adventure told with a cold, salt-air clarity.
