When she calls a preening literary hanger-on a fraud, the insult refuses to die, spreading into anonymous letters, blackmail and a quietly devastating chain of consequences for her fellow lodgers. Narrated years later with wry hindsight, the novel is brisk, funny and faintly sinister, full of post-war austerity, radionics quackery and office politics. Its pleasure lies in a voice that judges everyone, including herself, with unnerving accuracy.
