An amateur entomologist misses the last bus home after searching for insects near a remote Japanese village. Offered shelter for the night, he descends by rope ladder into a house at the bottom of a sand pit, where a young widow lives alone. By morning the ladder has vanished, and the villagers expect him to help shovel the endlessly encroaching dunes. His struggle to escape becomes entangled with his wary, intimate relationship with the woman. Claustrophobic, suspenseful and intensely physical, the novel turns shifting sand into both a mortal threat and a strange world of its own.
