A wounded Union soldier is found in the woods by a young pupil of a girls' boarding school in Confederate Virginia and carried inside to recover. The headmistress, her sister, the teachers and the students each respond differently to the stranger in their hallway, and as jealousy, desire and suspicion spread through the isolated house, his position turns from guest to prisoner. Narrated in rotating first-person voices, each unreliable in its own way, the novel builds slow, hothouse dread out of small cruelties and half-truths, with a heat-heavy sense of place and a genuinely sinister undertow.
