Fevvers, a celebrated aerialiste who claims to have been hatched from an egg and grown wings, tells her life story to a sceptical journalist in a London dressing room. Her account carries them into a travelling circus bound for St Petersburg and Siberia, through brothels, museums of curiosities, clown troupes and a frozen wilderness. Baroque, funny and darkly extravagant, the novel keeps its heroine's central impossibility teasingly unresolved while satirising spectacle, power and the business of being looked at. The prose is exuberant, the settings richly imagined, and the picaresque plot tumbles from one strange episode to the next.
