On the edge of a poor village in Veracruz, children find a body in an irrigation canal: the woman everyone called the Witch. From there the novel circles outward through the villagers who feared, used and needed her, each voice carrying rumour, desire, poverty and violence in long unbroken sentences that never let you set the book down. Melchor writes rural Mexico as a place of heat, gossip and machismo where superstition and economics are the same thing. Ferocious, propulsive and deeply humane beneath the brutality, it is a short book with the force of a much longer one.
