Celie, a poor Black girl in early twentieth-century rural Georgia, writes letters to God because she has no one else to tell. Over decades she survives abuse and a loveless marriage, and slowly finds her footing through the women around her: her lost sister Nettie, the blues singer Shug Avery and the unbreakable Sofia. Told entirely in letters and in Celie's own idiom, the novel moves from constriction toward astonishing freedom. Its subject matter is hard, yet the book is finally generous and full of humour, one of the great American novels of self-reclamation.
