At a girls' boarding school in the Swiss Appenzell, an unnamed narrator sets herself the task of conquering the new arrival, the perfect and remote Frédérique. What follows is an obsession conducted in glances, imitation and small cruelties, recalled years later by a woman still marked by it. Jaeggy writes in sentences of glassy precision, each one cool to the touch, evoking snow, discipline, adolescence and the strange intimacy of institutional life. Short enough to read in a single sitting, it lingers far longer, a study of control, devotion and the damage done by love that is never quite spoken aloud.
