Orphaned Philip Ashley is raised on a windswept Cornish estate by his beloved cousin Ambrose, who travels to Florence for his health, marries a mysterious widow named Rachel, and dies there under circumstances Philip cannot accept. When Rachel arrives in Cornwall, Philip means to expose her; instead he finds himself dazzled, and his suspicion curdles into obsession. Du Maurier builds a slow tightening dread out of sunlit gardens, inherited money and letters that say too much or too little. Told entirely from Philip's fevered viewpoint, it is a gothic puzzle about desire, jealousy and the impossibility of knowing another person. Atmospheric, propulsive and beautifully unresolved.
