Bengt is twenty when his mother dies, and the Stockholm flat he shares with his father becomes unbearable almost at once. Grief curdles into fury when he discovers his father's mistress, Gun, and fury slides into an attraction Bengt can neither admit nor escape. Dagerman moves between Bengt's letters to himself and a cool third-person account, tracing a young man's self-deception in forensic, unnervingly intimate detail. Set in a grey mid-century Sweden of trams, summer archipelago light and shabby rooms, it is an intense, morally unsparing novel about mourning, desire and cruelty that remains one of the great Swedish works of the last century.
