In 1870s London, grieving gentlewoman Margaret Prior becomes a 'lady visitor' at Millbank prison, where she is meant to bring moral improvement to the women in its damp, spiralling cells. Instead she is drawn to Selina Dawes, a young spiritualist medium imprisoned after a séance ended in disaster. As Margaret's visits become the centre of her narrow life, objects move, letters appear, and the boundary between deception and the uncanny thins. Waters writes Victorian claustrophobia superbly: laudanum, mourning dress, gaslight and hunger for escape. A tense, sombre psychological gothic about loneliness, class and the dangerous relief of being truly seen.
