Her investigation leads toward Ben, a former lover now raising Elliot, the orphaned son of two friends who died under troubling circumstances. Harriet suspects that Ben knows more than he admits, but every apparent answer complicates the story further. Told through an unusual arrangement of testimony, documents and competing accounts, the novel begins as a grounded investigation before opening into a larger speculative puzzle about memory, loss and devotion. Its atmosphere is tense and dark, but its emotional centre is ultimately hopeful.
