About this book
An artist inherits a century of photographs of one chestnut tree. A scientist discovers that trees communicate with each other and is mocked for it. A student is brought back from the edge of death with a new sense of purpose. These people, and others, begin in separate stories across America. Over the course of the novel, the forests draw several of them together in an effort to protect the last old-growth trees. The book is told across decades and in rich, lyrical prose. It is a slow-building story about activism, loss and the clash between human time and the far longer time of trees.
