Fourteen-year-old Erik grows up in a Stockholm home ruled by his stepfather's beatings and learns to answer violence with violence at school. Expelled, he is sent to Stjärnsberg, an exclusive boarding school where older pupils enforce discipline through a private system of humiliation and punishment, and where fighting back means expulsion. Erik's attempt to resist without raising his fists becomes a war of nerves fought in dormitories, corridors and the swimming hall. Set in 1950s Sweden and written with cold, forward-driving momentum, it is a tense study of cruelty, institutional power and the stubbornness required to survive them.
