Detective Inspector Kurt Wallander takes the case while his own life comes apart: a marriage ending, a difficult father, a daughter he cannot reach. The investigation proceeds through weather, paperwork and dead ends rather than chases, and the word soon stirs tensions in the surrounding towns. The first Wallander novel, it reads as a standalone, with a plain, melancholy style and a strong sense of flat fields, small stations and long nights.
