About this book
Leo Kall is a loyal chemist in the Worldstate, a totalitarian society where citizens are watched, spied on and expected to belong to the collective completely. He invents Kallocain, a truth serum that makes people reveal their hidden thoughts, and he believes it will make the state stronger. But as the drug is tested on volunteers and he grows suspicious of his own wife, his certainty starts to crack. Written in 1940, Boye's compact novel is tense and psychologically sharp. It is a disturbing look at fear, trust and how much freedom is left in the human heart.
