In Pajala, deep in Sweden's Torne Valley in the 1960s and 70s, two boys discover rock music, forbidden knowledge and the strange rituals of a community caught between Finnish and Swedish, faith and modernity. Matti narrates a childhood of sauna contests, brutal winters, tall tales and a first electric guitar, in episodes that swing between laugh-out-loud comedy and something close to folklore. The result is a warm, rowdy coming-of-age novel with a powerfully realised sense of place, told in short bursts that make it easy to read a few pages at a time and hard to stop.
