About this book
In the hard-scrabble parish of Ljuder in mid-nineteenth-century Småland, failed harvests, rigid church authority and crowded family farms push a group of very different people toward an enormous decision: leaving Sweden for North America. At the centre are the farmer Karl Oskar and his wife Kristina, but the novel moves among their neighbours, kin and fellow travellers, each with private reasons for going. Written in rich, earthy prose that draws on old peasant speech, it is a patient, grounded portrait of poverty, faith and stubborn hope. It opens one of the great Swedish epic cycles, and this first volume can be read on its own.
