About this book
Trevor Noah was born in apartheid South Africa to a Black Xhosa mother and a white Swiss father, at a time when their relationship was itself illegal. This memoir recalls growing up as a child who had to be hidden, then as a teenager working out where he belonged in a country remaking itself. At its centre is his fearless, devout and very funny mother. The stories cover poverty, petty hustles, faith and danger. Each chapter stands as its own short episode, and the tone moves easily between sharp comedy and real seriousness, giving a personal view of a country's recent history.
