About this book
In the autumn of 1973, the writer joins the field biologist George Schaller on a long walk across the Himalaya into the remote Dolpo region of Nepal. Schaller wants to study the Himalayan blue sheep. Matthiessen hopes to glimpse the rarely seen snow leopard and to visit an ancient Buddhist monastery at Crystal Mountain. The journal follows them over high passes, through snow and villages, and records the porters and monks they meet. It is also a record of the writer's Zen practice as he tries to stay present while grieving a recent loss. The book is reflective and luminous. Its precise descriptions of the mountains sit alongside honest thoughts about attention, impermanence and what it means to be still.
